Thousands of trees in Southern California are dying due to an invasive beetle known as the Shot Hole Borer. The non-native beetles bore into trees and introduce fungi that cause a disease called Fusarium dieback. The invasive beetles attack a wide variety of tree species including avocado, common landscape selections, and California native species in urban and wildland environments. When addressed quickly and properly the invasive insect can be stopped and dealt with.

.

Symptoms:

The Shot Hole Borers get their name from their ability to burrow into a tree and lay eggs; this leaves holes that look like gunshots. External symptoms include a sugary exudate, frass and entry, and exit holes. Internally, this fungal infection can interrupt the flow of water and nutrients to the tree’s branches.

Solution:

Cutting down diseased trees will not eliminate Fusarium dieback in an infected region. The Shot Hole Borer will continue to burrow into new trees, that’s why it’s crucial to take the proper precautions when disposing of infected materials.

Proper Disposal Protocol:

To get rid of as many beetles as possible, it’s recommended that all material is cut down to a diameter of one inch or less. Cover up the contaminated wood if it can’t be chipped immediately or transported correctly. Tightly wrap the logs in plastic to contain the beetles. Use sturdy plastic sheeting or tarp that can withstand rain and wind.

Wood that can’t be ground up must be left to solarize. This method is suitable for handling both infested chips and logs. When done correctly, solar energy will heat plant material until both the beetle and fungi are killed. Solarization is most effective during the peak of summer when temperatures are higher and days are longer. Covering the chips/logs with sturdy plastic for at least 6 weeks is recommended during this time period. Keep log/chip layers as thin as possible (2 logs deep maximum) to ensure even heating throughout the pile.

Don’t forget, it’s important to dispose of these materials properly. If you notice signs of a Shot-Hole Borer infestation, you should take immediate action to stop the spread.
